How to Enter Country Codes and Phone Numbers Correctly

Check whether the form includes the country code already, then compare the complete number with your order.

Before pasting a number, inspect the destination form. Does it already show a country and dialing code? Does it ask for a full international number? Checking this once is more useful than repeatedly requesting a code and discovering the input was wrong afterward.

One complete number or separate fields

An international number is commonly written with a plus sign, country code and the remaining number. Twilio's E.164 guide describes a maximum of 15 digits. A number can be formatted correctly and still be inactive or rejected by the destination service.

When the form already supplies a country selector and code, read its example. It may request only the remaining national portion. If it asks for the full international number, use that format. Do not automatically add the country code in every field.

A masked example of a common mistake

Suppose an order displays the structure “+1 XXX XXX XXXX.” The X characters are placeholders, not a usable telephone number. If the form already displays +1 on the left and requests the remaining number, adding another 1 can duplicate the country code.

The opposite mistake is leaving out the code when a complete international number is required. Check the final number shown on the confirmation screen, not simply whether the input field contains digits.

Do not identify the country from +1 alone

Vozira's US number guide notes that +1 is shared by multiple countries. It cannot by itself distinguish a US selection from a Canadian one. Compare the purchased country, order information and country selection in the destination form. A shared prefix does not make two products interchangeable.

Do not apply one rule to remove or add a domestic leading zero everywhere. If uncertain, consult the form's example and the relevant number-format instructions rather than repeatedly altering the number as a test. Follow the input's requirements for spaces and separators too.

One final check before requesting SMS

Confirm that the number belongs to the current order, the listed service matches your task, the selected country is correct, no digits are missing or duplicated, and the order remains valid. When copying, avoid including explanatory text or a number from another open order.

If the platform still rejects the number after these checks, retain the exact message and use the missing SMS checklist. Correct formatting is not proof that a message will be sent. Official format reference: Twilio's E.164 guide.
